Come spend the day in the barn with us during the busy lambing season! Meet our ewes and adorable lambs, learn about the lambing process, how we care for ewes and their newborns as well as how we think about herd health, record keeping, genetics, and more.
This workshop is specifically designed for current or aspiring sheep owners, animal lovers, and homesteaders who want to learn how to care for sheep, both at lambing and all year round.
After completing morning chores together, we’ll observe the flock for early signs of labor, check on our ewes and new lambs and perform ear tagging, tail docking etc. if needed. While we wait to (hopefully!) observe a lamb being born, we will discuss several topics including:
-
our preparations for lambing season, from selecting breeding groups to making our lambing kit
-
ewe and lamb health and nutrition
-
the lambing process: what is typical, when we intervene, and how
-
post-birth lamb care, including nutrition, tail docking and castration
-
record keeping, including ear tagging
-
vaccination and hoof trimming
-
considerations when we move lambs from the barn to pasture
Lunch, hot drinks, and snacks will be provided. Participants should wear sturdy waterproof boots, and layers appropriate for farm work and the weather. We will send more details and a packing list upon registration.
Fee: Sliding scale $300 - $100 per person. Registration fee is payable in advance or on site by cash or check. There are only eight spots available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Registration deadline is January 17th 2026. This program is designed for adults, though youth 14-17 may be able to attend with prior permission. For more information, email or call April Nugent anugent@coa.edu // 207-610-0552.
